Colic

How do you recognise it:

Colic usually only affects babies under 3 months. The baby is inconsolable. He/she oftens starts to cry again after 15 minutes to a half hour. Most often it starts at the end of the afternoon / early evening.

What can you do against it:

The good news: After 3 months, it will suddenly stop one day.

The bad news: The baby has colic because its bowels are not yet fully developed. Nine months in the fetal position doesn't give the bowels much room to grow. Therefore you cannot do anything about the cause. However, there are a few things you can try to alleviate the obvious pain.

Cinababy drops or
Chamomilla D6 or
Rooibos tea: boil water and give the baby 30cc warm tea or drink a liter a day yourself if you breastfeed. Product info page by manufacturer of Rooibos tea
Wrap the baby's tummy in a warm towel (Towels are quickly warmed up in the microwave).
If you bottlefeed, use mineral bottled water, it is softer then tap water. Bottled water should still be boiled for 1 minute!
Carry him/her with its tummy on your shoulder.
Try barley water, it causes mega farts, but that still beats crying.  Jump to recipe site
Some babies like a lot of white noise, try the vacuum cleaner or go for a drive.
If it drives you totally mad, ask someone else to babysit for a couple of hours, it will do you and the baby a world of good
Do not feel guilty because he's crying, you can't solve the problem and it WILL pass.
Sometimes it is better to let him/her cry in it's bed for a while. It gives them the chance to catch up with all the daily impressions and find some rest. Colic babies are sensitive to stimulation, and the constant picking up and cuddling can actually worsen the cramps.

Another type of colic is caused by hard stool.
