Hard stool

The 'normal' stool pattern for breastfed babies is between once a day and once a week. Bottlefed babies have bowel movements every 1 to 3 days. To decide whether your baby's pattern is 'normal' you should take heriditary things in consideration too: do you go often or not yourself?

When bottlefeeding first check whether you prepare it the right way:
The powder in the measure cup should have a flat top, no mountains.

If the milk is too warm, don't  cool it by adding cold water only. The mixture will be to lean and that will only cause the bowels to grow lazy. Top up with water and nutrition in the right mixture

once a day, add 1 teaspoon of sunflower oil to the milk bottle.
Some parts of the world have a lot of calcium in the tap water. That can lead to obstipation. Use bottled water to prepare the milk. Even this bottled water has to be boild for 1 minute when your baby is less then a month old, after that is not neccesary any more.
Once the little one is about 4 weeks, you might try to give him a few teaspoons of tomato juice. Works excellent.
Another recipe you can try: 2 teaspoons of orange juice and 1/2 teaspoon of brown suger in 30 cc water. Should be nicely warmed before they drink it.
From the age of 4 months all vegetables and fruit will help.
To minimize the pain, you should oint the anus of the bay with vaseline. You can do this for example by temping the baby once a day with a lot of vaseline on the thermometer. Do not fiddle in and out with it! Check carefully for little wounds in and around the anus, and have them checked by your docter if you find any.

Furthermore you can use some of same tips as for colic:

Wrap the baby's tummy in a warm towel (Towels are quickly warmed up in the microwave).

Carry him/her with its tummy on your shoulder.
Place your warm hand on it's tummy and massage softly.
