Tips to minimize vaccination pain

Bring some small wet towels with you, and place them on the spot after the injections.

Ask the doctor or the nurse to inject the cocktail slowly. The leg will be less painfull, because the tissues won't be pressed apart as forcefully But, they don't always have the time to do it slowly.

Once back home, hold your baby with his legs in lukewarm water. Start with lukewarm water and keep him/her there 15 minutes. The water will get colder by itself.

4 hours after the injections, the baby usually runs a fever and the legs hurt really badly. Put him in the living room in the pram, make a roll of a cotton diaper or towel and place the roll under his knees so that his legs are bent. Because stretching the legs is very painfull, you might give him the bottle in that position in the pram. A baby paracetamol can give relief. If the fever runs above 40 degrees Celcius (104 Fahrenheit) you should consult your local doctor.

Massage hard spots under the skin (induration) with Arnica oil or drops.

Jeanet Hoek sent us the following tip: Immediately after the jabs I massaged with JOHANNES oil on the painfull spot. You need to massage for about a minute. It helps great, my kids have never had painfull legs after a vaccination. You can buy Johannes oil in any drugstore, it costs about 4 Euro.

If you're in luck, your baby will only be a bit sleepy and not hungry for a while.
